about

Track 5: Smashing Idols
"...If this soul invariably followed the will of G-d, it is clear that it would not be lost. But the devil comes with his artful wiles, and, under colour of doing good, sets about undermining it in trivial ways, and involving it in practices which, so he gives it to understand, are not wrong; little by little he darkens its understanding, and weakens its will, and causes its self-love to increase, until in one way and another he begins to to withdraw it from the love of G-d and to persuade it to indulge its own wishes." (pg 111)
In this fifth room, we are called to ponder how the devout can fall away. The answer is a simple one. It is so simple that we overlook it and fail to treat it seriously. Always remember that evil's first and last defense is to make itself look less destructive or to even disguise itself as a good. This is the occasion that is commonly called idolatry that many of us fall into rather obliviously. Evil thrives when good men fail to call it by its right name. To commit moral treason is a result of loving the wrong things or of allowing oneself to be led astray and listen to idols rather than the Almighty. As Tim Keller has stated, idols can even be good things that we have made into ultimate things. To indulge in our own wishes and desires over that of loving G-d and neighbors well is to set ourselves up as our own Lord, which is the breaking of the first commandment. Our G-d is a jealous G-d and will not tolerate sharing the Throne, and so in love will smash our idols for us, even if the idol is ourselves.

I enjoy trying to make music. I always appreciated acoustic/folk that had some grit, some dark side to it that still had some quiet hope behind it all.
